Employee Introduction #8: Daniel Schulz

innFactory is characterized above all by a strong team and long-term collaboration. That’s why we want to introduce our team in short employee interviews.

Name:

Daniel Schulz

Education:

Bachelor’s student in Computer Science

Area of activity at innFactory:

Backend Developer

How long have you been working at innFactory and how did you become aware of innFactory?

I have been working at innFactory since February of this year and got to know the company through Toni in conversations at various meetups and events at TH Rosenheim. I was on-site for the first time at the meetup “VMs are yesterday! The path to the cloud with Kubernetes.” on October 25, 2018, with Peter Kurfer. Back then, it was all like voodoo, but I was very excited. There I also got a little insight into the work environment.

Why did you choose innFactory as your employer during your studies?

Because I wanted to continue working on a student project organized by innFactory. The topic is symbol recognition or counting in construction plans using tools from the field of computer vision. The project had already been running for two semesters, which is not usually the case, and I just didn’t want to stop with it. So I asked Tobi about a job, and he actually already said yes over the phone. The rest then went very quickly, and so I can still work on the same project today and realize myself. The great collaboration during the project was of course crucial for this wish and I will always remember it looking back on my studies.

What event was the absolute highlight at innFactory for you? Which implemented project are you particularly proud of?

Aside from my hiring, it’s the monthly retrospectives where I, as a remote developer, meet my colleagues, and I have tears in my eyes from laughing every time. Really a great sense of humor in the company. Apart from that, the personal exchange is just great and the results of the retros speak for themselves! As for the project, I can only refer to the former student project, which is still being actively developed. Since the transition from TH to innFactory in February, considerable results have been achieved, which of course confirms my decision from back then.

What distinguishes innFactory as an employer for you? Which three employee benefits do you particularly appreciate at innFactory?

innFactory is for me as a working student a stable companion during my studies, gives me perspective and security, and most importantly for me: the feeling of being heard even as a newcomer and being able to contribute real value with the knowledge learned from studies. Also, the three best benefits are:

– Home office

– Flexible working hours

– Largely free choice of my developer tools and work methods

You are currently working on your computer science bachelor’s thesis. What topic will you write your thesis on?

The topic is “Symbol recognition in technical drawings with neural networks.” There I will develop and apply a deep learning approach to the problem from the former student project.

What is your favorite programming language?

For my current work, I prefer Python.

What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not programming?

Spending time with my little family, organizing a meeting with friends, playing techno music, or simply reading a good book and daydreaming.

What’s next?

Regarding the project, there will probably be a “Coming soon.” For those interested, I offer a meetup on the topic of computer vision with an insight into my work as an employee of innFactory. Anyone who wants to get to know image processing beyond Photoshop and co. is welcome. Everyone else is of course welcome too. :) Otherwise, there’s a lot of learning new tools on the topic of cloud computing ahead, as well as a subsequent master’s degree in applied artificial intelligence.
