What is AWS Backup?

AWS Backup is a fully managed backup service that centrally manages and automates backups of AWS resources and hybrid workloads. Instead of configuring backups for each service individually, you define backup plans that apply to all supported resources.

The service supports EC2, RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, EFS, FSx, S3, and VMware workloads, among others. Beyond classic data protection, AWS Backup now also offers ransomware protection and compliance evidence features.

Core Features

  • Central Management: One dashboard for backups of all supported AWS services and hybrid workloads
  • Backup Plans: Schedules with retention policies and lifecycle rules
  • Cross-Region and Cross-Account Backup: Automatic copies to other regions or dedicated accounts for disaster recovery and isolation
  • Ransomware Protection: Immutable backups, malware scanning, and logically air-gapped vaults as an additional layer of defense
  • Vault Lock: WORM storage for immutable backups
  • Backup Audit Manager: Automated checks of whether resources comply with defined backup and compliance policies

Typical Use Cases

Compliance Requirements: Unified backup policies for all resources with demonstrable retention. Vault Lock and the Backup Audit Manager ensure backups cannot be deleted before expiration and that policies are followed.

Disaster Recovery: Cross-region backups enable fast recovery in another region. Automated restore tests regularly validate recovery capability.

Ransomware Resilience: Logically air-gapped vaults and immutable backups protect backup data even if the primary AWS account is compromised.

Multi-Account Environments: Central backup management via AWS Organizations. Backups can be copied to dedicated backup accounts.

Benefits

  • Unified backup policies across all services
  • Central monitoring and reporting
  • Additional layer of protection against ransomware through air-gapped vaults
  • Automated compliance with Vault Lock and Backup Audit Manager
  • Pay-per-use without upfront costs

Frequently Asked Questions

Which AWS services does AWS Backup support?

EC2, EBS, RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, EFS, FSx, Storage Gateway, DocumentDB, Neptune, S3, and VMware workloads. The list of supported resources is regularly expanded.

What is the difference to native backup features?

AWS Backup provides central management, unified policies, cross-service reporting, and compliance features via a Backup Audit Manager. Native backups must be configured separately per service.

Can I copy backups to other regions?

Yes. Cross-region backup copies can be created automatically for disaster recovery. You define target regions in backup plans.

How does AWS Backup protect against ransomware?

AWS Backup offers immutable backups, malware scanning, and logically air-gapped vaults that remain isolated even if the primary account is compromised. Vault Lock additionally enables WORM storage for compliance requirements.

How secure are my backups?

Backups are encrypted with AWS KMS. Vault Lock enables WORM storage, automated restore testing validates recoverability, and IAM policies control access to backup vaults.
