What is AWS Database Savings Plans?

AWS Database Savings Plans are a commitment-based pricing model for AWS database services. You commit to a consistent hourly spend, measured in US dollars per hour, over a one-year term and with no upfront payment. Usage within this commitment is billed at reduced prices of up to 35 percent, while usage above the commitment is billed at standard on-demand rates.

The model solves the problem that databases running continuously are expensive at on-demand prices, while classic Reserved Instances are rigidly tied to a specific instance class or region. AWS Database Savings Plans apply the discount automatically across database engine, instance family, size, deployment option and AWS Region. This keeps the commitment effective even when the architecture changes and makes database costs predictable to reduce.

Core Capabilities

  • Flexible discount across services: The reduced price applies automatically to Aurora, RDS, DynamoDB, ElastiCache for Valkey, DocumentDB, Neptune, Keyspaces, Timestream, DMS and OpenSearch Service.
  • No stranded commitment: If you migrate a workload, for example from RDS to Aurora or to Serverless, the commitment shifts automatically to other eligible services instead of being lost.
  • Region and instance independent: You can change instance types or move a workload between regions and keep the discount.
  • No upfront payment: The one-year term requires no advance payment and bills against the hourly spend.

Typical Use Cases

Predictable production workloads: Databases with a steady baseline run consistently for months. The hourly baseline is covered at discounted prices, while load peaks above it are billed at on-demand rates.

Cost optimization across a database portfolio: Organizations running multiple database services pool their baseline consumption into one shared commitment that applies automatically across all covered services.

Modernization without losing the discount: When migrating from RDS to Aurora or Serverless v2, the discount is preserved because the commitment shifts to the new eligible services.

Benefits

  • Up to 35 percent lower database costs compared to on-demand
  • Flexibility across engine, instance type, size, deployment and region
  • No loss of the commitment during migration or modernization
  • One-year term with no upfront payment

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AWS Database Savings Plans?

AWS Database Savings Plans are a commitment-based pricing model. You commit to a consistent hourly spend in US dollars per hour over a one-year term. In return you receive reduced prices of up to 35 percent across multiple AWS database services such as Aurora, RDS, DynamoDB and ElastiCache.

When should I use AWS Database Savings Plans?

The model pays off for predictable database workloads with a steady baseline. If your databases run at a stable minimum utilization month after month, the commitment covers that baseline at reduced prices. Seasonal peaks above the commitment continue to be billed at on-demand rates.

How much does AWS Database Savings Plans cost?

You pay a fixed hourly amount that you commit to for one year with no upfront payment. Usage within the commitment is billed at discounted rates and usage above it at on-demand rates. The discount level varies by service and deployment type, with up to 35 percent as the maximum.

Which database services does AWS Database Savings Plans cover?

Covered services include Amazon Aurora including Serverless v2 and Aurora DSQL, Amazon RDS, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon ElastiCache for Valkey, Amazon DocumentDB, Amazon Neptune including Neptune Analytics, Amazon Keyspaces, Amazon Timestream, AWS DMS and Amazon OpenSearch Service. For the same workload, Database Savings Plans cannot be combined with RDS Reserved Instances or DynamoDB reserved capacity.
