What are AWS Elemental Appliances & Software?

AWS Elemental Appliances & Software provide professional media processing directly in your data center. The current portfolio includes dedicated hardware encoders (AWS Elemental Live, AWS Elemental Link), orchestration software (Conductor Live), and MediaLive Anywhere, a hybrid solution connecting local encoding hardware with cloud-based control.

The appliances are based on the same technology as AWS Elemental cloud services (MediaLive, MediaConvert) but run entirely or partially on-premises. This is relevant for broadcasters, media companies, and organizations that need to process media locally for latency, compliance, or cost reasons. The earlier on-premises transcoding solution AWS Elemental Server has not been sold as new since 2021 and is now in a support wind-down.

Core Features

  • AWS Elemental Live: Broadcast-grade hardware encoder appliance for multi-channel live encoding with minimal latency (SDI, RTMP, RTP, and more)
  • AWS Elemental Link: Compact single-channel encoder for direct connection to AWS Media Services
  • Conductor Live: Orchestration and management of individual or clustered live encoder nodes
  • MediaLive Anywhere: Hybrid deployment model combining local encoding with cloud-based control
  • Professional Formats: Support for broadcast standards (HEVC, AVC, MPEG-2)

Typical Use Cases

Live Broadcast: Encode live signals directly in the broadcast center with minimal latency. Elemental Live appliances process SDI input signals and deliver streams in all common broadcast formats.

Hybrid Media Architecture: Process time-critical live signals on-premises with MediaLive Anywhere and use the cloud for file-based transcoding, archiving, and CDN distribution.

Regulated Environments: Process media content in environments with strict data protection requirements entirely locally, without data leaving your own data center.

Benefits

  • Full control over media processing infrastructure
  • Minimal latency for live broadcast scenarios
  • Hybrid architectures with seamless AWS cloud integration
  • Proven broadcast technology

Frequently Asked Questions

What are AWS Elemental Appliances & Software?

AWS Elemental Appliances & Software are dedicated hardware appliances and software licenses for professional media processing in your own data center. The current portfolio includes AWS Elemental Live (encoding appliance), AWS Elemental Link (compact single-channel encoder), Conductor Live (orchestration), and MediaLive Anywhere for hybrid cloud connectivity.

When should I use on-premises instead of cloud services?

On-premises solutions are suitable for scenarios with very low latency (live broadcast), strict data sovereignty, existing infrastructure, or when permanent high load makes a cloud solution uneconomical. Many organizations use hybrid architectures.

Can Elemental Appliances integrate with AWS cloud services?

Yes, Elemental Appliances can seamlessly integrate with AWS cloud services such as MediaLive, MediaPackage, and S3. MediaLive Anywhere connects local encoding hardware directly to cloud-based control. This allows you to build hybrid workflows that process on-premises and in the cloud.

What about AWS Elemental Server?

AWS Elemental Server, the earlier on-premises transcoding solution for file-based workflows, has not been sold as new since late 2021 and is now in a support wind-down (AWS-stated end of support in late 2026). For new file-based on-premises or hybrid workflows, AWS recommends current solutions such as MediaConvert (cloud) or MediaLive Anywhere.
