What is the AWS European Sovereign Cloud?

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is an independent AWS partition (aws-eusc) operated entirely within the European Union. Its first Region is located in the State of Brandenburg, Germany, and carries the Region code eusc-de-east-1. AWS made it generally available on 14 January 2026.

The partition targets public sector organisations and customers in highly regulated industries that must meet data residency and operational autonomy requirements in Europe. It complements the existing AWS Regions in Europe but is technically and organisationally separate from them.

Core Features

  • Independent partition: The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is built as the separate partition aws-eusc and is not part of the existing commercial AWS partition
  • European legal entities: Operated through dedicated European legal entities established under German law with EU-resident management
  • EU-based personnel: Day-to-day operations, technical support, and customer service are provided exclusively by EU residents located in the EU
  • Independent core systems: Dedicated identity and access management and billing systems operating within the EU
  • Dedicated trust infrastructure: A dedicated European trust service provider for certificate authority operations, plus dedicated Route 53 name servers using only European top-level domains
  • Broad service portfolio: Including EC2, Lambda, EKS, ECS, Aurora, DynamoDB, RDS, S3, EBS, VPC, KMS, AWS Private Certificate Authority, Amazon SageMaker, and Amazon Bedrock

Typical Use Cases

Public sector: Government agencies and public institutions run their applications in an environment whose operation and control remain in the EU.

Regulated industries: Organisations in financial services, healthcare, and critical infrastructure address data residency and operational autonomy requirements.

AI workloads with sovereignty requirements: Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker are available in the partition, so generative AI and machine learning can be used inside the sovereign environment.

German location: The first Region is in Brandenburg, placing data and operations at a German site.

Benefits

  • First Region at a German site in Brandenburg
  • Technical controls that, according to AWS, prevent access from outside the EU
  • Independent IAM and billing systems within the EU
