What is Amazon FSx for OpenZFS?

Amazon FSx for OpenZFS is a fully managed file system based on the proven open-source OpenZFS file system. It provides the powerful features of ZFS without the management overhead: copy-on-write for data integrity, near-instant snapshots, space-efficient clones, and built-in compression.

The service is accessible via the NFS protocol (v3, v4.0, v4.1, v4.2) from Linux, Windows, and macOS compute instances and containers, both in AWS and on premises. Existing ZFS-based or other Linux file server workloads can be migrated without changing application code.

Core Features

  • Copy-on-Write: ZFS data integrity through copy-on-write architecture
  • Near-Instant Snapshots: Space-efficient point-in-time snapshots stored directly on the file system
  • Clones: Fast, space-efficient copies of volumes for development and testing
  • Compression: Built-in data compression reduces storage costs
  • Two Storage Classes: SSD for consistent performance across the full dataset, and Intelligent-Tiering for elastic, cost-effective storage
  • NFS Access: Standard NFS protocol (v3, v4.0, v4.1, v4.2) for broad compatibility
  • Multiple Availability Tiers: Multi-AZ (HA), Single-AZ (HA), and Single-AZ (non-HA) deployments

Typical Use Cases

Linux Workload Migration: Organizations migrate existing ZFS-based or other Linux file server workloads without modifications. Familiar ZFS features and NFS access enable a smooth transition.

Development Environments: Teams create fast clones of production data for development and testing. Clones initially require no additional storage space and are available quickly.

Database Workloads: MySQL, PostgreSQL, and other databases benefit from low latency, fast snapshots for consistent backups, and ZFS compression for reduced storage costs.

Benefits

  • Familiar ZFS without dedicated management overhead
  • High throughput and low latency for data-intensive workloads
  • Fast snapshots and clones for agile workflows
  • Copy-on-write supports data integrity
  • Flexible storage classes and availability options

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Amazon FSx for OpenZFS?

Amazon FSx for OpenZFS is a fully managed file system based on the open-source OpenZFS file system. It offers latencies in the hundreds-of-microseconds range, high throughput, and features like snapshots, clones, compression, and data integrity through copy-on-write.

Who is FSx for OpenZFS suitable for?

FSx for OpenZFS is particularly suitable for workloads that benefit from ZFS features: fast snapshots, space-efficient clones, built-in compression, and data integrity. It is accessible from Linux, Windows, and macOS systems and is ideal for migrating on-premises ZFS or other Linux-based file servers.

How does FSx for OpenZFS differ from EFS?

FSx for OpenZFS offers ZFS-specific features like snapshots and clones, multiple storage classes (SSD and Intelligent-Tiering), and NFS support (v3, v4.0, v4.1, v4.2). Amazon EFS is an elastic, native AWS file system without ZFS capabilities, designed for many parallel clients.

What availability options are there?

FSx for OpenZFS offers three deployment types: Multi-AZ (HA) with replication across multiple Availability Zones, Single-AZ (HA) with a standby file system in the same zone, and Single-AZ (non-HA) with automatic self-healing. Multi-AZ and Single-AZ HA failover typically completes within 60 seconds.
