What is AWS Interconnect - multicloud?
Per AWS, AWS Interconnect is a family of managed, private connectivity services. It includes two offerings: “Interconnect - multicloud” for private connections between AWS VPCs and VPCs in other public clouds, and “Interconnect - last mile” for connecting branch offices and data centers to AWS through existing network providers. This article covers AWS Interconnect - multicloud.
Per AWS, AWS Interconnect - multicloud establishes a private, managed Layer 3 connection between your AWS environment and other cloud providers. The service has been generally available (GA) with Google Cloud since April 14, 2026. Per AWS, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) launched in public preview on May 15, 2026 and reached GA on July 29, 2026. Microsoft Azure has been in public preview since August 31, 2026, per AWS. Per AWS, traffic flows entirely over the AWS global backbone and the partner’s private network and never traverses the public internet.
Per the official AWS region availability page (as of September 2026), AWS Interconnect - multicloud supports eight region pairs to Google Cloud: US East (N. Virginia) to Google Cloud N. Virginia (us-east4), US West (N. California) to Google Cloud Los Angeles (us-west2), US West (Oregon) to Google Cloud Oregon (us-west1), Europe (London) to Google Cloud London (europe-west2), Europe (Frankfurt) to Google Cloud Frankfurt (europe-west3), Europe (Stockholm) to Google Cloud Stockholm (europe-north2), Asia Pacific (Singapore) to Google Cloud Singapore (asia-southeast1), and Asia Pacific (Sydney) to Google Cloud Sydney (australia-southeast1). Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) has been GA since July 29, 2026 in the region pair US East (N. Virginia) to OCI US East (Ashburn); Microsoft Azure has been in public preview since August 31, 2026 across four region pairs, including Europe (Frankfurt) to Azure Germany West Central. For customers in the DACH region, this means Europe (Frankfurt) is connected to both Google Cloud (GA) and, in preview, to Azure Germany West Central.
Core Features
- Managed Layer 3 connection: AWS and the partner handle provisioning and operation of the physical infrastructure; per AWS documentation, customers see only a single logical “interconnect” object
- Encryption by default: Per AWS documentation, all connections between the network devices are encrypted using IEEE 802.1AE MACsec
- Built-in resiliency: Every interconnect is provisioned across redundant network devices in at least two physically distinct facilities; per AWS, multicloud connections use a four-connection model with ECMP load balancing
- Fast provisioning and scaling: Per AWS documentation, new interconnects are typically ready within minutes; bandwidth can be adjusted directly through the console without rebuilding the connection
- Built-in network monitoring: Per AWS documentation, every interconnect includes a CloudWatch Network Synthetic Monitor at no extra cost for latency and packet loss metrics, plus a bandwidth utilization metric
Typical Use Cases
Simplifying multicloud architectures: Traffic flows over the AWS backbone to other cloud providers without requiring your own on-premises network devices or routers.
Connecting AI and analytics workloads across cloud boundaries: Per AWS, customers already use the service to connect workloads in AWS with services in Google Cloud.
Fast provisioning and scaling: Per AWS documentation, connections are established within minutes; bandwidth can be adjusted on demand without reprovisioning.
Global multicloud connectivity via AWS Cloud WAN: When using AWS Cloud WAN, per AWS any Core Network Edge (CNE) can reach any Interconnect globally that is attached to the same Direct Connect gateway.
Benefits
- Private connection with no public internet exposure, encrypted end to end with MACsec
- No need to manage your own routers or cross-connects
- Bandwidth scales without reprovisioning
- Free baseline monitoring for latency, packet loss, and utilization

Frequently Asked Questions
What is AWS Interconnect - multicloud?
Per AWS, AWS Interconnect - multicloud is a private, managed Layer 3 connection between your AWS environment and other cloud providers. It is part of the 'AWS Interconnect' service family and has been generally available (GA) since April 14, 2026. Per AWS, traffic flows entirely over the AWS global backbone and never over the public internet.
Which cloud providers and regions are supported?
Per the official AWS region availability page (region-availability.html), the service is available to Google Cloud in eight region pairs: US East (N. Virginia) to Google Cloud N. Virginia (us-east4), US West (N. California) to Google Cloud Los Angeles (us-west2), US West (Oregon) to Google Cloud Oregon (us-west1), Europe (London) to Google Cloud London (europe-west2), Europe (Frankfurt) to Google Cloud Frankfurt (europe-west3), Europe (Stockholm) to Google Cloud Stockholm (europe-north2), Asia Pacific (Singapore) to Google Cloud Singapore (asia-southeast1), and Asia Pacific (Sydney) to Google Cloud Sydney (australia-southeast1). Per an official AWS announcement, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) has been generally available (GA) since July 29, 2026, currently in the region pair US East (N. Virginia) to OCI US East (Ashburn). Microsoft Azure has been in public preview since August 31, 2026, per AWS, available across four region pairs: US East (N. Virginia) to Azure East US, US West (N. California) to Azure West US, Europe (Frankfurt) to Azure Germany West Central, and Asia Pacific (Sydney) to Azure Australia East. For customers in the DACH region, this means Europe (Frankfurt) is connected to both Google Cloud (GA) and, in preview, to Azure Germany West Central.
Is there a second Interconnect option besides multicloud?
Yes. Under the 'AWS Interconnect' family, AWS also offers 'AWS Interconnect - last mile' for connecting branch offices, data centers, and remote locations to AWS through existing network providers. Per the official AWS region availability page, this option is available with Lumen in us-east-1 (N. Virginia); from the New Jersey sites in us-east-1 you can reach any AWS Region globally, and you can also connect from anywhere in the continental United States through the Lumen connectivity fabric. Since June 30, 2026, AT&T has also been available as a second partner in gated preview for customers in the US, per AWS. Per AWS, additional partners and Regions will be added over time.
How much does AWS Interconnect - multicloud cost?
Per the official pricing page, billing is hourly per interconnect, based on the selected bandwidth and an automatically assigned pricing tier (five tiers, generally determined by geographic distance). There are no separate per-gigabyte data transfer charges. AWS gives $12.33/hour for 10 Gbps in Tier 1 and $51.78/hour for 10 Gbps in Tier 4 as examples. One free 500 Mbps interconnect per cloud provider and Region is included.
