What is AWS IoT Wireless?
AWS IoT Wireless is a managed cloud service that connects wireless devices to AWS using low-power wide area networking (LPWAN) protocols. The service covers two technologies: LoRaWAN and Amazon Sidewalk. Both can be onboarded, managed, and monitored through AWS IoT Wireless within AWS IoT.
AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN replaces a self-operated LoRaWAN Network Server (LNS): AWS handles gateway management through the Configuration and Update Server (CUPS) protocol and firmware updates over-the-air (FUOTA). The service supports all LoRaWAN 1.0.x and 1.1 compliant devices, device classes A, B, and C, and the OTAA and ABP activation methods.
AWS IoT Core for Amazon Sidewalk connects Amazon Sidewalk end devices to AWS IoT. Amazon Sidewalk is a network operated by Amazon that works through Sidewalk gateways, such as compatible Amazon Echo or Ring devices that share a portion of their internet bandwidth with the Sidewalk community. The service is available only in the AWS US East (N. Virginia) Region; per AWS, the Sidewalk network itself covers more than 90% of the U.S. population.
Core Features
- Managed LoRaWAN Network Server: No need to operate your own LNS, including gateway configuration via CUPS and firmware updates over-the-air
- Support for all LoRaWAN device classes: Classes A, B, and C, plus OTAA and ABP activation
- Amazon Sidewalk onboarding: Connect Sidewalk end devices through the console, API, or CLI
- Integration with AWS IoT Core: Associate wireless devices with AWS IoT things and route messages via the rules engine to more than 20 AWS and third-party services
- Monitoring: Real-time logging and monitoring of devices and gateways through Amazon CloudWatch, including a network analyzer for LoRaWAN
- Position resolution: Location determination for Amazon Sidewalk-enabled devices in the cloud
Typical Use Cases
Industrial asset tracking: Sensors on machinery or containers send condition data through LoRaWAN gateways to AWS IoT Wireless without operating a dedicated network server.
Smart building automation: Building sensors for temperature, occupancy, or energy consumption use LoRaWAN for low-power, long-range communication.
Predictive maintenance: Long-lived, battery-powered sensors transmit regular readings via LoRaWAN, routed through the rules engine to analytics services.
Consumer IoT over Amazon Sidewalk: Sidewalk-enabled end devices such as smart lights or door locks use the Amazon-operated Sidewalk network to connect to AWS IoT.
Benefits
- No need to operate your own LoRaWAN Network Server
- Unified management of LoRaWAN and Sidewalk devices through the same API and console
- Direct integration with the AWS IoT rules engine for routing to more than 20 services
- AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN available in multiple EU regions (Ireland, Frankfurt)
- Free starter allowance for AWS IoT Core for Amazon Sidewalk during the first six months
Integration with innFactory
As an AWS Reseller, innFactory supports you with AWS IoT Wireless: choosing between LoRaWAN and Amazon Sidewalk depending on your use case, connecting gateways and end devices, building rules engine integration into downstream analytics services, and regional planning that accounts for the limited availability of Amazon Sidewalk.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is AWS IoT Wireless?
Per the documentation, AWS IoT Wireless is a managed cloud service that connects wireless devices to the cloud, enabling data transmission and remote management. It supports the low-power wide area network protocols LoRaWAN and Amazon Sidewalk, connecting both device types to AWS IoT through AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN and AWS IoT Core for Amazon Sidewalk respectively.
What is the difference between AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN and AWS IoT Core for Amazon Sidewalk?
Per the documentation, AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN replaces a private LoRaWAN network server (LNS) and connects your own LoRaWAN gateways and devices to AWS, including gateway management via CUPS and firmware updates over-the-air. AWS IoT Core for Amazon Sidewalk instead connects Amazon Sidewalk end devices, which communicate through Sidewalk gateways such as compatible Echo or Ring devices; the Sidewalk network itself is operated by Amazon.
In which regions is AWS IoT Wireless available?
Per the AWS General Reference, the control plane endpoints for AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN are available in US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Europe (Ireland), Europe (Frankfurt), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), Asia Pacific (Sydney), and South America (São Paulo). Per the documentation, AWS IoT Core for Amazon Sidewalk can only be used in the US East (N. Virginia) Region.
What is the geographic availability of Amazon Sidewalk?
Per the official product page, the Amazon Sidewalk network offers coverage to more than 90% of the U.S. population. Availability outside the US is not mentioned on the official page; the associated AWS Region for AWS IoT Core for Amazon Sidewalk is exclusively US East (N. Virginia).
