What is Amazon Lookout for Equipment?

Amazon Lookout for Equipment is a fully managed ML service for predictive maintenance of industrial equipment. The service analyzes historical and real-time sensor data to identify patterns that indicate impending failures. Maintenance teams receive early warnings and can plan repairs before unplanned downtime occurs.

The service automatically builds ML models from your sensor data without requiring data scientists or ML expertise. Lookout for Equipment learns the normal operating behavior of each piece of equipment individually and detects subtle deviations that indicate wear or impending defects.

Core Features

  • Automatic Model Training: Builds ML models from historical sensor data without ML expertise
  • Multivariate Anomaly Detection: Analyzes correlations between up to 300 sensors simultaneously
  • Real-Time Inference: Continuous analysis of incoming sensor data with immediate alerts
  • Diagnostic Information: Identifies the sensors contributing to the anomaly
  • S3 Integration: Seamless data import from Amazon S3 for historical training data

Typical Use Cases

Manufacturing Plants: Monitoring of production machines, compressors, and pumps. Lookout for Equipment detects wear on bearings, seals, and mechanical components weeks before a failure.

Energy Generation: Wind turbines, generators, and transformers are continuously monitored. The service identifies anomalies in vibration and temperature data that indicate maintenance needs.

Process Industry: In chemical and pharmaceutical production, the service monitors critical process parameters and warns of deviations from normal operation.

Advantages

  • Reduces unplanned downtime through early detection
  • No ML expertise required for setup and operation
  • Analyzes complex relationships between hundreds of sensors
  • Optimizes maintenance intervals and reduces maintenance costs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Amazon Lookout for Equipment?

Amazon Lookout for Equipment is an ML service that detects anomalies in sensor data from industrial equipment. The service analyzes data such as temperature, pressure, RPM, and vibration to identify early signs of impending failures.

What types of sensor data are supported?

Lookout for Equipment processes time series data from up to 300 sensors per model. Typical data sources include temperature, pressure, vibration, RPM, current draw, and flow measurements from industrial control systems and IoT sensors.

Do I need historical failure data for training?

No, Lookout for Equipment learns the normal operating behavior of your equipment and detects deviations from it. Historical failure data improves accuracy but is not strictly required. The service also works with normal operation data only.
