What is Amazon Lookout for Vision?

Amazon Lookout for Vision is a fully managed computer vision service for automatic visual quality control. The service uses ML to detect defects in products and materials from camera images. Manufacturing companies can automate manual visual inspections and significantly increase detection rates.

The service requires no ML expertise: you provide example images of defect-free products, optionally supplemented with images of known defects. Lookout for Vision automatically trains a detection model that can then evaluate new images in real time. The model detects both known and novel defect types.

Core Features

  • Automatic Model Training: Training with few example images, no ML expertise required
  • Anomaly Detection: Detection of both known and novel defect types
  • Segmentation: Localization and marking of defective areas in the image
  • Edge Deployment: Export trained models to AWS Panorama or other edge devices
  • Dashboard: Clear visualization of detection rates and defect trends

Typical Use Cases

Manufacturing Inspection: Cameras on the production line capture images of every product. Lookout for Vision checks in real time for scratches, dents, cracks, and assembly errors, automatically sorting out defective parts.

Packaging Control: Verification of packaging for correct labeling, seal integrity, and physical damage. The service detects missing labels, damaged cartons, and faulty seals.

Material Inspection: Inspection of raw materials and semi-finished products for surface defects such as corrosion, discoloration, or contamination before they enter production.

Advantages

  • Automates manual visual inspections with higher consistency
  • Requires only a few training images to get started
  • Edge deployment for latency-free inspection on the production line
  • Detects novel defects not included in training data

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Amazon Lookout for Vision?

Amazon Lookout for Vision is a computer vision service that automatically detects visual defects in products and materials. The service trains models with just a few example images and identifies scratches, cracks, dents, discolorations, and other quality issues on the production line.

How many training images does Lookout for Vision need?

The service requires a minimum of 30 normal images and optionally some defect images for training. The more examples provided, the more accurate the detection becomes. Training typically takes a few hours and is fully automated.

Can Lookout for Vision run at the edge?

Yes, trained models can be exported to AWS Panorama or other edge devices. This enables inspection directly on the production line with minimal latency, without needing to transmit images to the cloud.
