AWS Elemental MediaPackage is a just-in-time video packaging and origination service that runs in the AWS Cloud. With MediaPackage, you can deliver highly secure, scalable, and reliable video streams to a wide variety of playback devices and content delivery networks (CDNs) without operating your own origin infrastructure. The current development version is MediaPackage v2; existing v1 resources for VOD workflows continue to be supported but are not automatically migrated.

Core Features

  • Just-in-Time Packaging: Packages a master stream into formats such as HLS, DASH, or CMAF only when requested
  • DRM Integration: Connects to Widevine, FairPlay, and PlayReady via the SPEKE standard
  • Time-Shifting: Features such as DVR window, start-over, and catch-up TV
  • VOD Creation: Derive on-demand content from live streams
  • CDN Integration: Seamless interoperation with content delivery networks such as Amazon CloudFront

Typical Use Cases

OTT Platforms: Prepare live streams and VOD content for various devices from a shared master stream.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AWS Elemental MediaPackage?

MediaPackage is AWS's just-in-time video packaging and origination service. It prepares secure, scalable video streams for a wide variety of playback devices and CDNs. The service is currently developed as MediaPackage version 2 (v2); older v1 resources continue to run separately.

What is just-in-time packaging?

With just-in-time packaging, a stored or incoming stream is only packaged into the requested output format (e.g. HLS, DASH) at the moment of playback. This means only a single master stream needs to be stored, reducing storage overhead.

Which DRM systems are supported?

MediaPackage integrates with common DRM systems such as Widevine, FairPlay, and PlayReady via the SPEKE standard. Connecting custom DRM providers via SPEKE is also possible.

How much does MediaPackage cost?

MediaPackage is billed based on data volume processed: for live workflows, both ingested video and packaged output video are charged; for VOD workflows, only the packaged output is charged. Current prices and volume discount details are listed on the official pricing page.
