What is Amazon Nova?

Amazon Nova is Amazon Web Services’ own foundation model family, announced at AWS re:Invent in December 2024. With the Nova family, Amazon directly competes with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in the large language model space. All Nova models are exclusively available through Amazon Bedrock and integrate seamlessly into existing Bedrock workflows, Agents, and Knowledge Bases. The family covers a broad range of use cases, from cost-efficient text processing to multimodal image and video analysis.

The Nova model family comprises four main variants for different requirements: Nova Micro is a text-only model without multimodal capabilities, optimized for maximum cost-efficiency and minimal latency, ideal for high-volume scenarios such as classification, extraction, or simple Q&A. Nova Lite is a fast multimodal model that processes text, image, and video as input, suited for interactive applications with moderate quality requirements. Nova Pro delivers the highest accuracy among standard Nova models and is suited for complex reasoning tasks, code generation, and multi-step problem solving. Nova Premier (2025) is the flagship of the family for the most demanding enterprise applications.

The family is complemented by specialized models: Nova Canvas for AI-powered image creation and editing, and Nova Reel for video generation from text prompts and reference images. These models enable the creation of professional visual content for marketing, product communication, and e-commerce without specific creative expertise. Amazon’s Nova models are positioned at significantly lower prices than comparable competing models, making them attractive for cost-optimized production applications.

innFactory supports you in selecting the right Nova model for your use case and integrating it into your existing Bedrock infrastructure. As an AWS Reseller, we can also advise you on cost-optimized usage and evaluation against third-party models such as Claude or Llama.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Amazon Nova?

Amazon Nova is Amazon's own foundation model family, announced at AWS re:Invent in December 2024. The models are exclusively available through Amazon Bedrock and cover text, image, and video tasks. Nova competes directly with models like GPT-4o, Claude 3.5, and Gemini 1.5.

What are the differences between Nova Micro, Lite, Pro, and Premier?

Nova Micro is a text-only model without multimodal capabilities, optimized for maximum cost-efficiency and low latency. Nova Lite is multimodal (text + image + video as input) and very fast. Nova Pro is the most capable all-round model with high accuracy for complex tasks. Nova Premier (2025) is the flagship model for the most demanding applications.

What is Amazon Nova Reel?

Amazon Nova Reel is a specialized model for AI-powered video generation from text prompts and images. It enables the creation of short promotional and marketing videos, product demonstrations, and animated content without video production expertise.

How do Nova models compare to Claude or Titan?

Amazon Nova models offer a better price-to-performance ratio than Claude models for mid-range requirements. For the highest quality requirements, Claude 3.5/3.7 Sonnet often remains the first choice. Amazon Titan models are gradually being replaced by the Nova family. All models are accessible via the same Bedrock API, making switching straightforward.

Can Nova models be used in a GDPR-compliant way?

Amazon Nova is available through Amazon Bedrock in EU regions. When used via Bedrock, input data is not used for model training by default. With an appropriate AWS data processing agreement, the service can be operated in a GDPR-compliant manner.
