What is AWS Outposts?

AWS Outposts brings AWS infrastructure, services, and APIs to your own datacenter or colocation facility. These are fully managed hardware racks or servers that provide the same AWS experience as in the cloud.

Outposts solves requirements for data residency, low latency, and local data processing while you benefit from consistent AWS APIs and management tools.

Core Features

  • Local AWS Services: EC2, EBS, S3, RDS, ECS, EKS on your hardware
  • Consistent APIs: Same tools, SDKs, and console as in AWS regions
  • Fully Managed: AWS handles hardware maintenance and updates
  • VPC Extension: Outposts are part of your VPC in the AWS region
  • Outposts Servers: Compact 1U/2U option for edge locations

Typical Use Cases

Data Residency: When data cannot leave your datacenter, Outposts still enables use of AWS services. Ideal for regulated industries in Germany and the EU.

Low Latency: For applications requiring sub-millisecond latency to local systems: production control, real-time analytics, gaming servers.

Hybrid Workloads: Distributed architectures with local processing and cloud integration. Local data collection with cloud-based analytics.

Benefits

  • AWS experience in your own datacenter
  • No local hardware management required
  • Seamless integration with AWS regions
  • Meets data residency requirements

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AWS Outposts?

AWS Outposts are fully managed racks with AWS infrastructure installed in your datacenter. They provide the same AWS APIs and services as in the cloud, but with local data processing.

Which services are available on Outposts?

EC2, EBS, S3, RDS, ECS, EKS, and EMR are available on Outposts. Services use the same APIs as in AWS regions and are managed through the AWS console.

What is the difference between Outposts Racks and Servers?

Outposts Racks are complete 42U racks for substantial workloads. Outposts Servers are individual 1U/2U servers for edge locations with limited space. Both provide local AWS compute and storage.

How is Outposts maintained?

AWS handles complete maintenance: hardware replacement, software updates, and monitoring. A connection to the nearest AWS region is required for management and updates.
