What is AWS Resource Access Manager?

AWS Resource Access Manager (RAM) enables secure sharing of AWS resources across multiple AWS accounts. Instead of duplicating resources in each account, they are created centrally and shared with other accounts through RAM. This reduces costs and simplifies management in multi-account environments.

RAM works seamlessly with AWS Organizations. Resources can be shared with the entire organization, individual Organizational Units, or specific accounts.

Core Features

  • Over 30 Resource Types: VPC Subnets, Transit Gateways, Route 53 Rules, License Manager, and many more
  • Organizations Integration: Automatic sharing with all or selected accounts in an organization
  • Granular Control: Permissions define which actions consumer accounts can perform on shared resources
  • Managed Permissions: AWS-managed and custom permission templates
  • External Sharing: Optionally share resources with accounts outside the organization

Typical Use Cases

Shared Networking: A central network account creates VPCs and subnets that are shared with workload accounts. Teams deploy their resources into shared subnets without managing their own networks.

Transit Gateway Sharing: A single Transit Gateway is centrally managed and shared with all accounts. This avoids duplicated network infrastructure and simplifies routing.

License Management: Software licenses are centrally managed through License Manager and shared across the organization with RAM. This prevents over-usage and optimizes license costs.

Benefits

  • No duplication of resources across accounts
  • Free to use with no additional fees
  • Central control over shared resources by the owner
  • Reduced management overhead in multi-account setups
