What is Amazon WorkSpaces Thin Client?

Amazon WorkSpaces Thin Client are compact, cost-effective endpoint devices for accessing virtual AWS desktops. The devices are centrally managed through the AWS Console and require no local IT administration.

Important notice (as of July 2026): AWS has announced the retirement of Amazon WorkSpaces Thin Client. Since April 20, 2026, no new devices can be registered. Support ends on March 31, 2027; after that date, neither device usage nor the management console will be available. Existing customers should plan an alternative early.

Core Features

  • Zero-Touch Deployment: Devices configure themselves automatically on first boot
  • Central Management: Firmware, configuration, and policies via AWS Console
  • Multi-Service Support: Connects to Amazon WorkSpaces Personal, Amazon WorkSpaces Applications (formerly AppStream 2.0), and Amazon WorkSpaces Secure Browser (formerly WorkSpaces Web)
  • No Local Data Storage: Enhanced security through cloud-based data processing
  • Compact Design: Energy-efficient hardware with small footprint

Typical Use Cases

Existing device fleets: Companies that registered devices before April 20, 2026 can continue operating them until support ends in March 2027.

Secure workstations in transition: Until migration, existing customers continue to benefit from the data-free architecture, where no information is stored locally on the endpoint.

Migration planning: Since new purchases are no longer possible, organizations should evaluate alternatives for their thin client fleet early.

Benefits

  • Simple, central management for existing customers until support ends
  • Enhanced security through local data-free operation
  • A clearly communicated retirement timeline simplifies device replacement planning
