What is Azure Maps?

Azure Maps is a collection of geospatial services and SDKs that provide maps, routing, search, traffic information, time zones, geolocation, and weather data for web and mobile applications. Developers can integrate location features without operating their own map data or infrastructure.

The platform offers a JavaScript/TypeScript Web SDK as well as language-agnostic REST APIs that can be integrated into any application or IoT solution. Some map data is sourced from third parties such as TomTom.

Core Features

  • Interactive maps (Render service) with raster and vector tiles across multiple map types and styles
  • Routing for cars, trucks, bicycles, pedestrians, and electric vehicles, including matrix and multipoint optimization
  • Search service for geocoding, reverse geocoding, and point-of-interest search
  • Real-time traffic data (traffic flow and incidents)
  • Geofencing service for location-based triggers and alerts
  • Time zone and geolocation services, plus weather data including weather along a route

Typical Use Cases

Fleet management: Optimized route planning, ETA calculation, and geofencing alerts when entering or leaving defined areas.

Delivery services: Dynamic route adjustment based on real-time traffic and integration of tracking features into customer apps.

IoT and asset tracking: Visualizing sensor locations on maps, correlating location data with telemetry, and setting up location-based automations, including in combination with geospatial visualizations in Microsoft Fabric.

Benefits

  • Integration into the Azure ecosystem, e.g. with Managed Identities and Azure Monitor
  • Broad range of services (maps, routing, search, traffic, weather) on a single platform
  • Power BI visual for geospatial data with no additional code
  • Unified billing through the Azure invoice

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Azure Maps differ from other mapping providers?

Azure Maps offers a feature set comparable to other major mapping platforms but integrates seamlessly with Azure services such as Managed Identities, Azure Monitor, and Power BI. For Microsoft customers, billing through existing Azure contracts is often simpler.

Are there free quotas?

Yes, a newly created Azure Maps account includes a monthly free quota for most APIs; usage beyond that is billed on a pay-per-use basis. Exact free quotas and per-API prices are documented on the official pricing page.

Can I add my own map data?

Yes, custom geospatial data can be uploaded and displayed on maps. For indoor maps (e.g. airports, shopping centers), Azure Maps offers a separate Creator service.

Is the Render v1 API still current?

No, the Azure Maps Render v1 API is marked as deprecated and, according to Microsoft’s documentation, is scheduled for retirement on 9/17/26. Existing integrations should be migrated to the current Render API version in time.
