What is Azure Managed Instance for Apache Cassandra?

Azure Managed Instance for Apache Cassandra is a fully managed service for pure open-source Apache Cassandra clusters. The service automates deployment and scaling of Cassandra datacenters, which are provisioned as virtual machine scale sets, while still allowing configuration overrides where needed.

Because it runs genuine open-source Cassandra, existing applications can be migrated without code changes. Azure handles provisioning, OS and Cassandra patching, certificate rotation, snapshot backups, and vulnerability scanning.

Core Features

  • Fully managed Cassandra datacenters built on VM scale sets
  • Support for Apache Cassandra versions up to 5.0
  • Hybrid connectivity to existing on-premises or multi-cloud Cassandra rings, for example via Azure ExpressRoute
  • Integration into Azure Virtual Networks for network isolation
  • Metrics via Metric Collector for Apache Cassandra, visualized in Prometheus, Grafana, or Azure Monitor
  • Automatic snapshot backups

Typical Use Cases

IoT Data Platforms: High-volume time-series data from IoT sensors is stored in Cassandra for fast writes and analytical queries.

E-Commerce Catalogs: Product catalogs with millions of items benefit from Cassandra’s fast reads and global distribution.

Hybrid Migrations: Organizations with existing on-premises Cassandra clusters extend their ring incrementally with Azure datacenters instead of performing a full migration in one step.

Benefits

  • No dedicated cluster administration required for routine tasks like patching or backups
  • Existing Cassandra expertise and tooling remain usable since it is standard open-source Cassandra
  • Hybrid deployment with on-premises or multi-cloud Cassandra is possible
  • Flexible, instance-based billing with no additional licensing fees

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Cassandra version is supported?

The service currently supports Apache Cassandra versions up to 5.0. The exact version is specified when the cluster is created.

Can I connect my on-premises Cassandra cluster?

Yes, a hybrid configuration lets you add Azure datacenters to an existing on-premises or multi-cloud Cassandra ring, for example via Azure ExpressRoute.

How does scaling work?

The number of nodes per datacenter is set through simple commands; a scaling orchestrator handles adding or removing nodes from the Cassandra ring, including rebalancing.

What is the difference from Cosmos DB for Apache Cassandra?

Managed Instance is pure open-source Cassandra with full control over configuration and VM resources. Azure Cosmos DB for Apache Cassandra, by contrast, is a Cosmos DB implementation with Cassandra protocol compatibility and its own consistency and scaling models.
