What is Azure Managed Lustre?

Azure Managed Lustre is a fully managed parallel file service built on the open-source Lustre file system, optimized for high-performance computing (HPC) and AI/ML workloads. The service delivers high throughput and low latency for compute-intensive applications, without customers having to operate the complex Lustre infrastructure themselves.

Lustre is a distributed file system widely used in supercomputing environments. Azure Managed Lustre handles provisioning, operations, and maintenance, including a regular maintenance window for system updates.

Core Features

  • Parallel, POSIX-compatible file system for HPC and AI applications
  • Selectable throughput tiers per TiB of capacity (currently 40, 125, 250, and 500 MB/s per TiB), which determine the maximum storage capacity per tier
  • Scalable capacity from a few TiB up to the PiB range, with larger capacities available on request
  • Integration with Azure Blob Storage for hierarchical storage management (import/export, data tiering)
  • Connectivity to Azure Kubernetes Service via a compatible CSI driver
  • VNet integration for secure network connectivity

Typical Use Cases

HPC Simulations: Engineering and scientific simulations (CFD, FEM) require parallel access to large datasets with low latency.

Machine Learning Training: ML training runs benefit when training data can be read in parallel by many GPU nodes simultaneously.

Genomics and Life Sciences: Genome sequencing and bioinformatics pipelines process large volumes of data with high I/O requirements.

Benefits

  • No dedicated Lustre expertise required to operate the infrastructure
  • Integration with Azure Blob Storage for cost-efficient data tiering
  • Scales alongside HPC and GPU compute clusters
  • Deployment is significantly faster than building a self-managed Lustre environment

Frequently Asked Questions

What throughput options are available?

When creating the file system, you select a throughput per TiB of capacity; the currently available tiers are 40, 125, 250, and 500 MB/s per TiB, each with its own minimum, maximum, and increment for capacity. Larger, PiB-scale capacities are available on request through support.

Can I load data from Blob Storage?

Yes, the optional Blob Storage integration uses Lustre hierarchical storage management (HSM) to import and export data between Azure Blob Storage and the Lustre file system.

What workloads is Managed Lustre suited for?

The service is designed for HPC and AI workloads with high parallel I/O demands, such as simulations, ML training, or genomic analysis, which typically run on HPC- or GPU-optimized VM families.

How does Managed Lustre differ from Azure Files?

Azure Files is optimized for general-purpose file workloads. Managed Lustre is specifically designed for extreme parallelism and high throughput in HPC and AI workloads.
