Azure Monitor is Microsoft’s unified observability service for cloud and hybrid environments. It collects metrics, logs, traces, and events on a single platform, making availability, performance, and health of applications and infrastructure visible.

What is Azure Monitor?

Azure Monitor is not a DevOps or CI/CD tool but Microsoft Azure’s central observability service. It brings together metrics, logs, traces, and events from Azure resources, virtual machines, Kubernetes clusters, applications, and on-premises systems in a shared data platform.

The Azure Monitor data platform consists of two workspace types: Log Analytics workspaces for log and trace data (queried with the Kusto Query Language, KQL), and Azure Monitor workspaces for Prometheus and OpenTelemetry metrics (queried with PromQL). Other Azure services, such as Microsoft Sentinel and Microsoft Defender for Cloud, build on this same data platform.

A key feature is Application Insights, an OpenTelemetry-based APM capability for monitoring web applications, including distributed tracing. Through integration with Microsoft Foundry and Copilot Studio, Application Insights also provides monitoring for AI agents (token consumption, latency, error rates, quality scores).

Especially for organizations with GDPR requirements, Azure Monitor is available in European Azure regions, and data is stored in the region selected at deployment.

Core Features

  • Centralized collection of metrics, logs, traces, and events across Azure, hybrid, and multicloud environments
  • Log Analytics with KQL for flexible queries and correlation of log and trace data
  • Application Insights for application performance monitoring (APM) and distributed tracing
  • Alerting with metric alerts, log alerts, dynamic thresholds, and smart detection
  • Autoscale to automatically scale resources based on metrics or schedules
  • Integration with Azure Arc for monitoring hybrid and multicloud environments

Typical Use Cases

Application Performance Monitoring: Monitoring web applications and APIs with Application Insights, including error rates, response times, and distributed tracing across microservices.

Infrastructure Monitoring: Monitoring virtual machines, Kubernetes clusters, and network components with metrics and logs, complemented by Azure Network Watcher for network diagnostics.

Centralized Alerting: Proactive notifications on anomalies or threshold breaches, with automated responses via action groups, Logic Apps, or Azure Automation runbooks.

Benefits

  • A unified platform for metrics, logs, and traces instead of isolated point solutions
  • Open standards through OpenTelemetry and Prometheus support
  • Seamless integration across the Azure ecosystem and hybrid scenarios via Azure Arc
  • Usage-based billing without upfront investment in monitoring infrastructure

Frequently Asked Questions about Azure Monitor

What is Azure Monitor?

Azure Monitor is Microsoft’s central observability service for collecting, analyzing, and visualizing telemetry data (metrics, logs, traces) from Azure resources, applications, and hybrid environments. It is not a DevOps or CI/CD tool, but the monitoring and diagnostics foundation for cloud operations.

What does Azure Monitor cost?

Azure Monitor uses a usage-based pricing model based primarily on ingested data volume (logs, metrics) and the chosen retention period. For an accurate cost estimate, use the Azure pricing calculator.

What is the difference between Log Analytics workspaces and Azure Monitor workspaces?

Log Analytics workspaces store log and trace data, queried with KQL. Azure Monitor workspaces store Prometheus and OpenTelemetry metrics, queried with PromQL. Both are separate resource types with different data stores and query languages.

Can Azure Monitor be operated in compliance with GDPR?

Yes, when European Azure regions are selected as the storage location. Microsoft provides compliance certifications and data processing agreements; the specific data processing setup should still be reviewed for your use case.

Can Azure Monitor monitor hybrid and multicloud environments?

Yes. Azure Arc lets you connect resources from other clouds and on-premises data centers and monitor them alongside Azure resources. For large data volumes or environments with unreliable connectivity, an Azure Monitor pipeline component is also available.
