What is Azure Operator Nexus?

Azure Operator Nexus is a carrier-grade hybrid cloud platform purpose-built for telecommunications operators and their network-intensive, mission-critical workloads. The management plane lives in Azure, while the control plane and user plane run on infrastructure installed at the operator’s premises, or in Azure as well.

The on-premises infrastructure is built on a Microsoft-defined, certified hardware bill of materials consisting of commercially available servers, network switches, and storage systems. An ExpressRoute connection permanently links the Nexus instance to an Azure region, giving operators access to Azure services such as Azure Monitor, Azure Container Registry, and Azure Kubernetes Service. If connectivity is interrupted, existing workloads continue running, but new resources cannot be orchestrated.

Core Features

  • Automated lifecycle management of the on-premises infrastructure (network fabric, bare-metal hosts, storage appliances)
  • Support for virtualized (VNF) and containerized (CNF) network functions from Microsoft and partners
  • Provisioning of Nexus AKS clusters for containerized workloads and virtual machines for virtualized network functions
  • Integration with Azure services such as Azure Monitor, Azure Container Registry, and Azure Kubernetes Service via the management plane
  • Support for both IPv4 and IPv6 across all layers of the stack
  • Nexus Ready program for validating third-party network functions on the platform

Typical Use Cases

Azure Operator Nexus targets telecommunications providers who want to run 4G/5G and other network functions on a unified, Azure-managed platform. Typical scenarios include building near-edge or far-edge sites for mobile networks, consolidating virtualized and containerized network functions, and unifying governance and monitoring across distributed operator sites.

Benefits

  • Unified management of on-premises network workloads through the Azure platform
  • Automated provisioning and updates of certified hardware and software components
  • End-to-end governance via Azure RBAC and Azure Policy, extended to on-premises resources
  • Access to the Azure ecosystem (monitoring, container registry, AKS) directly from the operator environment

Frequently Asked Questions about Azure Operator Nexus

What is Azure Operator Nexus?

Azure Operator Nexus is a hybrid cloud platform for telecommunications operators where the management plane lives in Azure, while the control plane and workloads run on certified hardware in the operator’s own datacenter.

When should I use Azure Operator Nexus?

Operator Nexus is a good fit for telecommunications companies running virtualized or containerized network functions (VNF/CNF) with carrier-grade requirements who want to benefit from centralized Azure management, automation, and governance.

What does Azure Operator Nexus cost?

Costs combine procurement of the required hardware bill of materials for on-premises operation with Azure billing for management components, connectivity, and cloud services consumed. An individual consultation is recommended for a cost estimate.

How does Azure Operator Nexus integrate with other Azure services?

An ExpressRoute connection links the on-premises instance to an Azure region. This allows telemetry to be analyzed in Azure Monitor or Log Analytics, container images to be distributed via Azure Container Registry, and Nexus AKS clusters to be managed like regular AKS clusters.

Can I use Azure Operator Nexus in hybrid cloud scenarios?

Yes, Azure Operator Nexus is designed from the ground up as a hybrid platform: workloads run on-premises, while management, automation, and many services are provided centrally through Azure.
