What is Microsoft Purview Unified Catalog?
Microsoft Purview Unified Catalog is the data governance platform within Microsoft Purview. It aims to move data governance beyond a purely defensive function: good data governance makes data more visible to users and creates opportunities to reunite the business with the data that fuels it. All of these capabilities sit in a single, integrated SaaS framework, so data consumers, data stewards and data owners don’t need to switch between applications.
Unified Catalog follows a federated governance approach: a centralized place to develop data safety, quality and standards, combined with tools for self-service access control, discoverability and maintenance. Core Features
Governance domains: They align the data estate to business areas such as Marketing or Finance and act like a mini catalog inside Unified Catalog, holding glossary terms, OKRs and data products.
Data products: They group related data assets such as tables, files and Power BI reports so users no longer need to request individual access to many tables.
Access policies and critical data elements: Access policies manage self-service access requests. Critical data elements logically group important information, for example CustID from one table and CID from another as a single Customer ID, and carry data quality rules and access policies.
Glossary terms as active objects: Terms not only provide context but, through attached policies, determine how data assets are managed, governed and made discoverable. Terms applied to data products trickle down to the contained assets.
Data estate health and data quality: Health controls score your governance practices against standards, health actions name concrete improvement steps, and data quality provides scores at the asset, data product and governance domain levels.

What is a governance domain?
A governance domain is a boundary that aligns your data estate to your organization, for example Marketing or Finance. Microsoft describes it as a mini catalog inside Unified Catalog. It contains the terms that define users' day-to-day work, OKRs, and data products that make data discovery more straightforward.
What is a data product?
A data product groups related data assets such as tables, files and reports so users can find the full picture. Instead of requesting access to 15 different tables, one request covers the data product. When one user researches and creates a viable data product, everyone else benefits from that work.
How do access policies work?
Unified Catalog access policies manage access to data products and set up a system for users to request it. Access policies can also be attached to critical data elements and glossary terms so they apply across the data estate.
How is governance progress measured?
Health controls measure current governance practices against standards and give the data estate a score. Health actions provide concrete steps for improvement. Data quality adds quality scores at the asset, data product and governance domain levels.
Is Unified Catalog available everywhere?
