Azure Remote Rendering on Microsoft Azure

What is Azure Remote Rendering?

Azure Remote Rendering (ARR) is a cloud service that performs high-quality 3D rendering on powerful Azure servers and streams the result in real-time to mixed reality headsets or mobile devices.

The service enables visualization of complex 3D models (millions of polygons) that would be too demanding for local device hardware. Industrial CAD models, architectural designs, or medical scans can be viewed in full quality on HoloLens 2 or compatible devices.

ARR uses Azure’s GPU-optimized VMs for raytracing, PBR materials, and high-resolution textures. Latency is minimized through edge streaming and rendering prediction.

Typical Use Cases

Industrial design review: Engineers and designers view complex CAD models (cars, machines, plants) in mixed reality without simplification or quality loss. Annotations and measurements directly on the virtual object.

Architecture presentation: Architects walk clients through building designs in true-to-life quality. Materials, lighting, and spatial feel are rendered realistically.

Training and simulation: Technicians train on virtual machines before physical prototypes exist. Simulate maintenance procedures on complex equipment.

Product configuration: Customers configure products (vehicles, furniture, machines) in mixed reality and see changes in real-time with high visual quality.

Frequently Asked Questions about Azure Remote Rendering

Which 3D formats are supported?

ARR uses the arrAsset format. Conversion from FBX and GLTF is supported. CAD formats can be converted via third-party tools. The conversion process runs as an Azure Batch job.

How large can models be?

ARR Standard tier supports models with up to 20 million polygons, Premium tier up to several hundred million. Textures up to 8K resolution.

Which devices are supported?

Primarily HoloLens 2 for mixed reality. Desktop applications (Unity) for development and preview. Mobile devices via AR frameworks.

How low is the latency?

With optimal network connection, under 50ms latency is possible. Prediction algorithms compensate for head movements. Edge connectivity is recommended for best results.

What does Azure Remote Rendering cost?

Standard VM: approximately 4 EUR/hour, Premium VM: approximately 12 EUR/hour. Additional costs for model conversion and storage.
