What is Azure SRE Agent?

Azure SRE Agent is an AI-powered service that helps Site Reliability Engineers and operations teams investigate incidents, troubleshoot problems, and automate remediation tasks across Azure resources. The agent uses large language models to understand natural language queries and, when configured in privileged mode, can take actions on Azure resources on your behalf. The service reached general availability (GA) in March 2026 and is no longer in preview.

The agent integrates deeply with Azure monitoring and observability tools such as Azure Monitor, Application Insights, and Log Analytics, understands SRE methodologies and common incident response patterns, and retains context across multiple investigation sessions. For a risk-free start, a read-only Reader mode is available; production remediation actions require explicitly configured permissions.

Core Features

  • Incident investigation: Analysis of logs and metrics from Azure Monitor, Application Insights, and Log Analytics to identify root causes.
  • Remediation actions: In privileged mode, the agent can directly execute configured remediation actions; in Reader mode, access remains read-only.
  • Custom subagents and integrations: Connections to external services such as GitHub, Azure DevOps, Jira, or Slack, as well as custom tools via the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
  • Network flexibility: Operation without VNet integration over the public internet (Unrestricted mode) or with VNet integration for egress control, private endpoints, and compliance requirements.
  • Context retention: Maintains investigation context across multiple interactions and sessions.

Typical Use Cases

Incident Response Acceleration: Faster mean time to resolution through automated log correlation and root cause analysis during production issues.

On-Call Support: Supporting on-call teams through AI-powered initial analysis before escalating to experienced engineers.

Automated Remediation: In privileged mode, defined, recurring remediation actions can be automated, such as restarting failing services after prior approval.

Post-Incident Review: Summarizing incident timelines and supporting the identification of preventive measures.

Benefits

  • Faster problem resolution through automated analysis instead of purely manual log review.
  • Access to Azure-specific knowledge of best practices and common failure patterns.
  • Consistent, standardized incident approach regardless of responder experience level.
  • Flexible network integration depending on security and compliance requirements.
  • According to the provider, data is not used to train AI models.

Frequently Asked Questions about Azure SRE Agent

What data does the SRE Agent analyze?

The agent can access Azure Monitor logs, Application Insights, Log Analytics, Azure Resource Manager, and other connected services. Access is bound to the RBAC permissions of the configured identity.

Does the SRE Agent replace Site Reliability Engineers?

No, the agent is a support tool. It accelerates initial analysis and provides context, but more complex decisions and remediation actions not pre-approved still require human oversight.

Is the SRE Agent usable in a GDPR-compliant way?

Data is stored in the Azure region where the agent is deployed. Sweden Central is available as an EU region. The provider states that customer data is not used to train AI models. Details on compliance and data residency are available in the official documentation.

Do I need VNet integration to use the agent?

No, the agent works fully without VNet integration over the public internet in its default mode. VNet integration makes sense when Log Analytics workspaces, AKS clusters, or databases are reachable only via private endpoints, or when enterprise policies require it.

What does Azure SRE Agent cost?

Billing is based on Azure Agent Units (AAU), with a fixed always-on component per agent-hour plus a variable, token-based component for active processing. There is no free tier; current prices are available on the official Azure pricing page.

In which regions is the SRE Agent available?

The service is currently available in a limited number of regions, including Sweden Central, East US 2, and Australia East, with more regions planned. Once deployed, the agent can investigate resources across all Azure regions, regardless of where the agent itself is hosted.
