What is Blockchain Analytics?

Per the documentation, Blockchain Analytics offers indexed blockchain data that is analyzed directly through BigQuery via SQL. The service solves the problem that teams doing their own on-chain analysis would otherwise need to run their own blockchain nodes or build and maintain their own indexers. Instead, you can query the full history of blocks, transactions, logs, and call traces via SQL and join it with internal application databases.

Per the schema documentation, datasets are available for multiple EVM-compatible networks, including Arbitrum One, Avalanche Contract Chain, Cronos Mainnet, Ethereum Mainnet, Fantom Opera, Optimism Mainnet, Polygon Mainnet, and Tron Mainnet; the Ethereum Goerli testnet is documented as end-of-life. Most networks provide tables for blocks, decoded events, logs, receipts, and transactions; Ethereum Mainnet adds accounts state, token transfers, traces, and specialized address-optimized materialized views. Addresses are indexed in all lowercase across the datasets, so queries with mixed-case addresses should use the LOWER() function.

Per the locations documentation, Blockchain Analytics is available in two multi-regions: US and EU. Data is provided as BigQuery datasets in the selected multi-region; data in the EU multi-region is stored exclusively in the europe-west1 (Belgium) or europe-west4 (Netherlands) data centers.

Per the release notes, the service has been in preview since July 17, 2023, and remains subject to the Pre-GA Offerings Terms; it is provided “as is” with, per the documentation, limited support.

Core Features

  • Indexed on-chain data in BigQuery: Full history of blocks, transactions, logs, and call traces queryable via SQL, without operating your own nodes.
  • Multiple supported networks: Including Arbitrum One, Avalanche, Cronos, Ethereum Mainnet, Fantom, Optimism, Polygon, and Tron.
  • EU and US multi-region: Data storage in either the EU multi-region (europe-west1, europe-west4) or the US multi-region.
  • Free storage: Storage is free; only BigQuery query volume or reserved flat-rate slots are billed.
  • Joinable with your own data: On-chain data can be combined via SQL with internal application databases in BigQuery.

Typical Use Cases

Web3 analytics without running your own nodes

Teams analyze on-chain activity, such as transaction volume or smart contract interactions, via SQL without operating their own blockchain nodes or maintaining indexer pipelines.

Joining on-chain and application data

On-chain data from BigQuery is combined with internal user or transaction data to build complete analyses across Web3 applications.

Reporting and compliance analysis

Historical blockchain data serves as the basis for reporting and compliance analyses, such as tracing token transfers or contract interactions.

EU data residency for on-chain analytics

For EU data residency requirements, datasets can be sourced through the EU multi-region (europe-west1, europe-west4).

Benefits

  • No need to run your own nodes or build custom indexer pipelines.
  • Integrated into BigQuery pricing, with no separate extra charges for the service itself.
  • EU multi-region option for data residency requirements.
  • Direct SQL joins with existing BigQuery data assets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Blockchain Analytics?

Per the documentation, Blockchain Analytics offers indexed blockchain data that can be analyzed via SQL through BigQuery. Users can query the full history of blocks, transactions, logs, and call traces without operating their own nodes or building and maintaining their own indexers.

Which blockchains are supported?

Per the documentation and schema reference, the offering includes Arbitrum One, Avalanche Contract Chain, Cronos Mainnet, Ethereum Mainnet, Fantom Opera, Optimism Mainnet, Polygon Mainnet, and Tron Mainnet; the Ethereum Goerli testnet is documented as end-of-life. Most networks provide tables for blocks, decoded events, logs, receipts, and transactions, with Ethereum Mainnet additionally offering accounts state, token transfers, and traces.

How much does Blockchain Analytics cost?

Per the official pricing page, costs are integrated into the BigQuery pricing model; there is no additional charge for Blockchain Analytics itself. Under on-demand pricing, the first 1 TB of query data per month is free, after which billing is based on data processed. Flat-rate pricing with reserved slots is also available, and enterprises can request a custom quote.

Is Blockchain Analytics generally available (GA) yet?

No. Per the release notes, the preview version was released on July 17, 2023, and the service remains subject to the Pre-GA Offerings Terms. It is provided "as is" with, per the documentation, limited support; there is no standard SLA.
