Reliability 99.9% or 99.99% depending on redundancy topology (see official SLA page) SLA

What is Cloud Interconnect?

Cloud Interconnect provides dedicated, private connections between your data center and Google Cloud, or directly to networks of other cloud providers. Traffic bypasses the public internet for lower latency, higher bandwidth, and improved security. There are three variants: Dedicated Interconnect, Partner Interconnect, and Cross-Cloud Interconnect.

Core Features

  • Dedicated Interconnect: Direct 10-Gbps or 100-Gbps connection to Google, combinable up to 200 Gbps
  • Partner Interconnect: Connection via certified service providers with flexible bandwidth
  • Cross-Cloud Interconnect: Direct connection to other cloud providers for multi-cloud architectures
  • MACsec Encryption: Layer 2 encryption for supported Dedicated Interconnect connections
  • HA Topologies: Up to 99.99% SLA with redundant connections

Typical Use Cases

Hybrid Cloud Workloads

Applications running both on-premises and in GCP. Low latency for database replication or backup traffic.

Multi-Cloud Architectures

Direct connection between Google Cloud and other cloud providers via Cross-Cloud Interconnect, without routing data over the public internet.

Data Migration

Migrate large amounts of data to the cloud. Interconnect provides consistent, high bandwidth without internet bottlenecks.

Disaster Recovery

GCP as a DR site with fast replication. In emergencies, failover times are minimal due to dedicated connections.

Benefits

  • Private connection without public internet
  • Often lower egress costs than via internet
  • Consistent latency and bandwidth
  • SLA up to 99.99% possible with redundant configuration

Available Tiers & Options

Partner Interconnect

Strengths
  • Flexible bandwidth from 50 Mbps to 50 Gbps
  • No own colocation needed
  • Faster setup
Considerations
  • Dependency on service provider
  • Slightly higher latency than Dedicated

Cross-Cloud Interconnect

Strengths
  • Direct physical connection to other cloud providers (e.g. AWS, Azure, OCI)
  • Avoids routing over the public internet in multi-cloud architectures
Considerations
  • Availability limited to specific locations and partner data centers

Typical Use Cases

High-bandwidth connectivity
Low-latency access
Hybrid cloud
Data center extension

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cloud Interconnect?

Cloud Interconnect connects your data center or network in another cloud directly to Google Cloud via a private physical connection. Traffic does not go over the public internet.

What's the difference between Dedicated and Partner Interconnect?

Dedicated Interconnect requires a physical connection at a Google colocation location. Partner Interconnect uses a service provider as intermediary, making it more flexible on bandwidth and location.

What bandwidths are available?

Dedicated Interconnect offers 10-Gbps or 100-Gbps circuits that can be combined for higher total bandwidth. Partner Interconnect offers bandwidths from 50 Mbps to 50 Gbps depending on the partner.

Does Cloud Interconnect support encryption?

Yes, MACsec encryption is available for supported Dedicated Interconnect connections. Alternatively, HA VPN can be tunneled over Interconnect.

What is Cross-Cloud Interconnect?

Cross-Cloud Interconnect is a direct physical connection from Google Cloud to networks of other cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, or OCI, without routing over the public internet.

How long does setup take?

Dedicated Interconnect typically requires several weeks for physical installation. Partner Interconnect can be active considerably faster.
