What is Cloud Router?
Cloud Router is a fully managed BGP router (Border Gateway Protocol) from Google Cloud. It enables dynamic routing between your VPC network and on-premise networks or other cloud environments via Cloud VPN or Cloud Interconnect.
Unlike static routing, Cloud Router learns routes automatically via BGP and propagates changes in real time. When a new subnet is created in your VPC, it is automatically announced to connected networks.
Core Features
- BGP routing: Dynamic route exchange via the Border Gateway Protocol
- Automatic route propagation: New subnets are automatically announced
- Regional and global mode: Routing within a region or across all regions
- High availability: Redundant router instances with automatic failover
Typical Use Cases
Hybrid Cloud Architecture
Organizations connect their on-premise data centers to Google Cloud via Cloud VPN or Interconnect. Cloud Router ensures automatic routing updates when network changes occur on either side.
Multi-Region Deployments
For globally distributed applications, Cloud Router in global mode enables routing between all regions through a single VPN or Interconnect connection.
Benefits
- No manual route maintenance for network changes
- Free as part of VPN/Interconnect
- Highly available with automatic failover
- Standards-compliant BGP for interoperability

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Cloud Router?
Cloud Router is a fully managed BGP router from Google Cloud that enables dynamic routing between your VPC network and on-premise or other cloud networks.
Why dynamic instead of static routing?
Dynamic routing with BGP automatically adapts routes to network changes. New subnets are automatically propagated without manual route maintenance. This reduces operational overhead and error sources.
Does Cloud Router cost extra?
Cloud Router itself is free. Costs arise only for the associated connections like Cloud VPN or Cloud Interconnect and the data traffic.
