What are Network Service Tiers?

Network Service Tiers enables choosing between performance and cost for network traffic. Premium Tier uses Google’s global backbone network for lowest latency and highest reliability. Standard Tier uses regular internet routing with lower costs.

This flexibility enables optimization based on workload requirements. Critical applications use Premium, less sensitive workloads save with Standard.

Core Features

  • Choice between Premium and Standard per IP
  • Premium uses Google’s premium backbone
  • Standard uses regular internet routing
  • Granular control per resource
  • Transparent cost structure

Common Use Cases

Global Applications: Premium Tier for applications with global users. Traffic enters Google’s network at the nearest POP and stays on the backbone. Lowest latency worldwide.

Regional Services: Standard Tier for services primarily used regionally. Cost savings without significant performance degradation for users in the same region.

Hybrid Strategy: Premium for user facing traffic, Standard for backend communication and backups. Optimal balance between performance and cost.

Benefits

  • Flexible choice per workload
  • Significant cost savings with Standard
  • Premium offers lowest latency
  • Granular control without architecture changes

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Network Service Tiers?

Network Service Tiers offers the choice between Premium and Standard network. Premium uses Google's global backbone, Standard uses regular internet routing with lower costs.

What is the difference between Premium and Standard?

Premium Tier routes traffic through Google's own network with low latency and high reliability. Standard Tier uses regular ISP routing with higher latency but lower costs.

When should I choose Standard Tier?

Standard Tier is suitable for regional workloads where latency is less critical and cost optimization is a priority. Not recommended for latency sensitive global applications.

Can I choose tiers per resource?

Yes, Network Tiers can be selected per external IP address. You can combine Premium for critical services and Standard for less critical workloads.

How much does Standard Tier save?

Standard Tier is typically 25 to 50 percent cheaper than Premium for egress traffic. Exact savings depend on region and volume.
