What is Unified Maintenance?
Unified Maintenance is a Google Cloud service that centrally surfaces planned maintenance events across multiple Google Cloud services. Per the documentation, planned maintenance is “any scheduled maintenance performed by Google that impacts one or more customer resources.” Potential impacts include downtime, reduced availability, latency spikes, or performance degradation from software or hardware updates.
The service provides visibility into upcoming maintenance events before they occur, plus maintenance controls: depending on the supported service, you can reschedule updates or apply them on demand. Through the Cloud Logging integration, notifications can be routed to workflow tools such as Slack, PagerDuty, or email.
Unified Maintenance does not cover every Google Cloud product, and regional support varies; check the regions and zones documentation for the current list. Unplanned incidents such as outages, hardware failures, or software defects are not captured here. Google points to Personalized Service Health for those. Maintenance activity data is deleted after 60 days, with complete erasure taking up to 80 days.
Core Features
- Central maintenance overview: Visibility into upcoming maintenance events across supported Google Cloud services.
- Maintenance controls: Depending on the service, you can reschedule updates or apply them on demand, for example for Compute Engine, Cloud SQL, AlloyDB, Memorystore, or GKE cluster upgrades.
- Cloud Logging integration: Maintenance information is delivered as log entries and can be routed through existing logging integrations such as Slack, PagerDuty, or email.
- Limited data retention: Maintenance activity data is deleted after 60 days, with complete erasure finished within up to 80 days.
Typical Use Cases
Centralized maintenance visibility: Teams running resources across multiple Google Cloud services get a consolidated view of upcoming maintenance windows instead of separate, service-specific notifications.
Proactive operations planning: For services with on-demand updates, such as Compute Engine or Cloud SQL, updates can be triggered outside business-critical hours instead of waiting for the automatic maintenance window.
Alerting into existing workflows: The Cloud Logging integration feeds maintenance events into existing notification channels such as Slack or PagerDuty without introducing separate tooling.
Benefits
- A central view of planned maintenance across multiple Google Cloud services instead of scattered individual notices.
- Free to use; only regular Cloud Logging charges beyond the free tier apply.
- Control options (reschedule, on-demand) for a subset of supported services reduce unplanned operational disruption.
- Connects to existing alerting workflows through Cloud Logging.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Unified Maintenance?
Unified Maintenance is a Google Cloud service that provides visibility into planned maintenance events that can affect customer resources, such as downtime, reduced availability, latency spikes, or performance degradation from software or hardware updates. The service integrates with Cloud Logging to deliver notifications.
Which services are supported?
Per the documentation, supported services include AlloyDB for PostgreSQL, Apigee, Backup and DR Service, Bare Metal Solution, Cloud Interconnect, Cloud SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server), Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Looker, Managed Service for Apache Airflow, and Memorystore for Memcached and Redis. Capabilities vary by service: some support both rescheduling and on-demand updates, others support neither. Not all Google Cloud products are covered.
How much does Unified Maintenance cost?
Using Unified Maintenance itself is free of charge. Because the service generates logs, however, Cloud Logging charges can apply once you exceed the free tier.
Is Unified Maintenance available in Germany or the EU?
The documentation lists European regions including europe-west1 (St. Ghislain), europe-west2 (London), europe-west3 (Frankfurt), europe-west4 (Eemshaven), europe-west6 (Zurich), europe-west8 (Milan), europe-west9 (Paris), europe-west10 (Berlin), europe-west12 (Turin), europe-southwest1 (Madrid), europe-central2 (Warsaw), europe-north1 (Hamina), and europe-north2 (Stockholm). Frankfurt is therefore documented as a German region.
