What is the STACKIT Automation Service?
The STACKIT Automation Service is a central automation service based on proven STACKIT cloud services, intended to simplify usage, increase reliability, and deliver custom features faster. Using predefined templates, you can design, schedule, and run automated tasks in your cloud environment.
The service has been in public preview (beta) since 30 June 2026. It starts with disk volumes: creation and lifecycle management of volume snapshots can be automated.
Core Features
- Snapshot-based recovery: Volume snapshots serve as high-performance recovery points for near-instantaneous state restoration
- Dynamic resource discovery: All volumes matching the specified labels are picked up automatically, including newly created ones
- Execution flexibility: Automations run on a custom schedule or are triggered on demand
- Automatic retention management: The oldest snapshots are pruned automatically to maintain defined limits
- Standardized templates: Recurring workflows are expressed consistently, reducing manual error
Typical Use Cases
Disk volume protection: Snapshots are created and rotated on a schedule without anyone having to remember them.
Policies across many resources: Instead of maintaining individual volumes, a policy is applied to all matching resources via labels.
Lifecycle management: Creation and deletion of snapshots are governed together, keeping storage use and quotas under control.
Less manual operational effort: Standardized templates replace custom scripts and cron jobs.
Benefits
- Fewer sources of error: Standardized automations instead of individual scripts
- Scales with the environment: Newly created, properly labeled volumes are included automatically
- Controlled retention: Retention rules prevent unbounded snapshot growth
- Native to STACKIT: No additional automation tooling required
Integration with innFactory
As an official STACKIT partner, innFactory supports you with the Automation Service: label concepts for your resources, snapshot and retention strategies, integration into existing backup and recovery plans, and assessing what the preview status means for production use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the STACKIT Automation Service?
The Automation Service is a central automation service based on proven STACKIT cloud services. It lets you design, schedule, and run automated tasks in your cloud environment. The service has been in public preview (beta) since 30 June 2026.
Which tasks can be automated?
The service starts with disk volumes: creation and lifecycle management of volume snapshots can be automated, including automatic rotation. Additional resource types are listed in the official documentation.
How are the affected resources selected?
Through labels. The service automatically discovers all volumes matching the specified labels and includes resources added later on.
How is unbounded snapshot growth prevented?
Through automatic retention management: the oldest snapshots are pruned automatically so your defined limits are maintained and backups do not fail because quotas are exhausted.
Can automations be triggered manually?
Yes. Automations can run on a custom schedule or be triggered on demand whenever you need them.
