What is the STACKIT Server Agent?

The STACKIT Server Agent is a lightweight tool for monitoring and managing STACKIT servers. It runs on the server itself and provides the technical basis for rolling out commands and scripts centrally instead of logging into every system individually. On public STACKIT images the agent is preinstalled by default.

The Server Agent has been generally available (GA) since 18 May 2026.

Core Features

  • Script execution: Run custom shell and PowerShell scripts directly on STACKIT servers
  • Command templates: Predefined templates simplify common administrative steps
  • Flexible installation: Via STACKIT IaaS API, STACKIT CLI, STACKIT Terraform, on already running servers, or through the STACKIT Portal
  • Self-updating: The agent updates its binaries through a built-in update mechanism with no customer action required
  • Basis for update management: The Server Update Management Service is set up through the agent

Typical Use Cases

Administration across a fleet: Configuration changes or verification scripts are started centrally instead of being executed manually on each server.

Automated system updates: Server Update Management is set up through the agent and applies updates automatically.

Standardized operating procedures: Command templates ensure recurring steps run consistently and traceably.

Infrastructure as code: Installation can be embedded into existing provisioning pipelines via CLI, API, or Terraform.

Benefits

  • No extra operational effort: The agent keeps itself up to date
  • Preinstalled: Available on public STACKIT images without additional steps
  • Cross-platform: Support for both shell and PowerShell scripts
  • Automatable: Roll-out via API, CLI, and Terraform
